Hello, All:
My sister recently had her smart TV fail. Not the display part, but the actual processing part to where she just gets a "blue screen of death". She is getting another to replacement since TV repair is no longer an option in these parts. My concern is that if she just puts it in the pile at the recycling facility for electronics, what would stop someone from making what might be a simple repair and then accessing all of her paid streaming accounts? Part of me wants to tell her to destroy the old one so that this is impossible, but that also seems like a terrible waste. Any suggestions on a safe and secure way to dispose of her old TV?

Generally speaking E-cycle around here doesn't allow anyone to rummage through electronics. Electronics are broken down to their parts: plastics, circuit boards, screens, memory, et cetera and hauled away...back to China I assume.

Good to know, Dean. I will pass this on to her. I'm not sure if the local county landfill goes to that extent, but I'm sure we can locate a legitimate electronics recycler in her area. Thanks very much for your response.

Check out your local Landfill as to their policy, such as the city of Jacksonville:
Computers & TVs
"These items are collected once a week, typically on Tuesdays. Call Jacksonville Sanitation with the address and the type of electronics (up to two appliances each week at no charge) by Monday afternoon; then, have the appliance at the curb by 7:30AM Tuesday morning."
If she is in North Carolina, you can find more information on this page:
